The gates opened at ten. By half past, the first tram from the station was disgorging its passengers onto the lane and Billy Butlin, in a new suit and a hat two sizes too small, was standing at the entrance shaking every hand that would be shaken.
Behind him, the flagpole carried the red and white banner that from that day forward would mean something quite specific to the working people of Britain: this week, at least, was theirs.
