Book Two — The Holiday Camp King · 1936–1980
The Redcoats
The uniform was an accident. In the first year, the camp had employed twenty-five entertainments staff and lost most of them within a fortnight to shyness, homesickness, or a girl in Grimsby. What Butlin needed was not staff but a visible promise: that if you were lonely, someone would find you; if you were bored, someone would fetch you.
He chose red because red was the colour of the fair.
